A gym owner in San Francisco wants to help you get fitter and stronger and maybe a little stoned in the process. Jim McAlpine, owner of the soon-to-be Power Plant Fitness — the country’s first cannabis gym — will open this May.
In a new interview with Outside magazine, McAlpine says his mission is to change the “heavy-lidded couch-bound” stereotype of marijuana users that abounds and instead prove that weed can take your workout to new heights.
The gym will offer cannabis performance assessments.
While he’s still “hammering out the details,” McAlpine said that the gym will offer cannabis performance assessments from trainers, who will then guide gym-goers through weed-assisted workout plans. You’ll also be able to buy a Power Plant-branded line of edibles at the gym, he says.
The research is mixed, but recent studies do show that pot might increase your pain threshold and reduce anxiety and inflammation. McAlpine also says that he’s seen enough anecdotal proof in his work as a fitness professional to believe that weed can “help you get into the zone, into eye-of-the-tiger mode.” That’s partly why he partnered with former football player Ricky Williams for the first round of seed money.
Soon, McAlpine is also hoping to add locations in San Jose, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, and Denver.
